Whether said or unsaid, I think everybody has some sort of philosophy they live by when it comes to their trade, skill, hobby, occupation or lifestyle. Recently, I’ve been trying to define my philosophy as an artist. I think when I have a statement that defines who I am as a designer, photographer, writer and musician–everything will become a bit more clear and focused in my work.

So my working statement is, “When necessary, use words.” If you’re a church history guru, you probably know who I’ve thieved this statement from. But this statement is who I want to be as an artist. When people see, hear and read my work–I want my work to evoke emotion, give a feeling, connect in a real way, change opinions, lead to understanding–in as few words as possible. I guess that could be considered user experience. People tend to respond better and take more ownership over something they’ve experienced, rather than been told.

Now that I think about it, maybe that can be my life philosophy.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to lead worship at Grace Ann Arbor again. Julie (my wife) was able to sing with me this time, which was an added bonus. The videographer is just a tripod in the back of the room and the camera is just a flip. So no fancy camera work but you can hear the room filled with worship!

I wrote this song for the Children’s Ministry at church. They are doing a series on “loving God’s creation” for the month of June. Also, they’re VBS-like family event called, Family Jam, is themed around the same thought of “loving God’s creation”. They’ll be playing this song every Sunday morning for the children and every night at Family Jam. Hope you enjoy this bluesy rendition about loving God’s creation.

It’s been long time since I’ve submitted anything so I decided today was a convenient day to do so. I spent some time today putting down some Christmas scratch practice tracks to send to the guys playing with me this Sunday morning. So, here’s a rough cut of a song that’s been in my head for the past week and a half. It’s my response to the events that have happened over the past couple of weeks. This is a very simple song as you’ll quickly figure out. I’m relying heavily on its dynamics to bring the song to full fruition. I’m thinking about adding in some strings and some Rhodes. birthday money well spent

The other day, at the doorstep of the big snow storm, I ventured to guitar center to spend my birthday money. I’m very pleased with what I got. I bought two new pedals for my electric guitar, a Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner and a Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde Ultimate Overdrive. I absolutely love the Boss! The best part is, is that it powers all the rest of my pedals. I no longer have a use a big bulky powerstrip on my undersized, home-made suitcase, pedal board.

I was a little leary of the Jekyll & Hyde but I took the salespersons advice and gave it a whirl on a pseudo set-up of my gear. I ended up liking it a lot. I went with the intention to get the Ibanez Tube Screamer. The cool part about the Jekyll & Hyde is that it has an overdrive side and a distortion side. The overdrive side is modeled after the Tube Screamer’s 70′s model (this is the one that everybody tries to get). All in all, I’m very happy with my purchase it has definitely added depth to my electric guitar and I no longer have to use the factory overdrive on my amp.

There hasn’t been a day that has gone by that I haven’t played the Telecaster (which is odd). I’ve really enjoyed it with my new pedals. Who knows maybe I’ll start playing it out a little more!

You Are God

Ok, so here is a song I’ve been working on. It’s called You Are God. It’s a little pitchy in places and definitely far from perfect but I wanted to get your thoughts and feelings on it. Please leave constructive ideas and encouraging words!
